Skin and Bones

Sometime in 2006, Jeff and I began playing around with wordless naked caveman stories called "Skin and Bones." I used this as an opportunity to loosen up my art style. I used no pencil and drew directly with a pen.

The first story we completed was 40 pages long. We were proud of this sucker and wrapped it in hand-drawn 40 grit  sandpaper covers. Nobody seemed to like it, since the books would instantly scratch the hell out of any other book it came in contact with . . . or maybe it was all the masturbation. We don't know.

Below is the much shorter second story.  I actually penciled it and then inked it. We were planning a series of these shorter caveman kid stories, but soon got distracted by our 600 page graphic novel, Moses.

Jeff recently cleaned it up and I redrew a bit. It is still very rough, but we think it has a lot of heart.

Thanks for looking

Dean

Nirvana

This will be the last of my music musings for awhile. Jeff and I are working on a 120 page story called, Boom. When that wraps up, I will get back to B-Sides.

This was the first time I saw Nirvana. That's Dale Crover of the Melvins playing drums.

It really went down this way. I contend that the self-abuse was very real. We just took it for punk rock exuberance. I remember their opening song, "Love Buzz," was such a relief after STP. I had no photo reference for STP. I don't remember the song that drew me into the pit though, probably "Scoff" or "Floyd."

Panel one features my old concert-going comrades, Aric Vance (in the Butthole Surfers shirt) and Travis McKenney (in the plaid).

Here is a link to an audio recording of the show and photos. The actual set starts at 11.20.

Everything by me.
Jeff did his usual cleaning-uppering. Thanks, dude.

Hair

My ruminations on punk hair and how it changed over time, thank god. The idea that your hair or music preference could get you beat up seems absolutely silly now, as it did then, but, trust me, it was very real.

Banned in DC

Here is the next post by Dean of his music musings. He's staying with the Bad Brains for this one. These drawings are based on one of his strolls around Long Beach. Each DNA a real tag he found.

Everything by Dean.
Clean up by Jeff.

Next up: Hair

My First Time

Honestly, the show was way more crowded than I depicted, but you get the idea.  You can find a full video of the show at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1-HmtGv-0M. I jumped in at 29:11, when "I Against I" kicks in.

Fun fact: The Country Club used to be a grocery store and is now a church.

Everything by me. Jeff cleaned it up. Thanks, bro.
